We've shared this picture on our Facebook page before, and I was thinking about it again this morning.
It's actually a pretty good synopsis of the project we're undertaking at Pickwick.
If you've been following our work from the beginning, you might have already noticed that our team is moving through the alphabet. For example, early on, when we discussed the plans for each barn, the north barn was going to be Acres of Adventure, the middle barn was going to be The Loft, (if you really followed along, you might have known that at one time we even discussed housing a restaurant in this barn, too) and the south barn was going to be The Market. We stuck to that plan pretty closely for quite some time. Then, we started asking "what if." We started reevaluating our plans and the feasibility. When we took a step back and really looked at where we were, we realized that maybe we needed to move on to the next letter.
So where are we now? If you've been out to The Pickwick Place this summer (and if you haven't- what are you waiting for?!), you know that The Market is now in the north barn. It is full of cool, local products and fresh produce. It has even expanded since just a month ago, with the addition of a new cooler which allows us to offer even more products. The Loft has obviously opened in the middle barn and is off and running. So, what about that south barn, and what about Acres of Adventure?
From the beginning, our group has had the desire to bring a nice, sit-down restaurant to Bucyrus. We still see that as a possibility at The Pickwick Place. We'd love to find the right person to bring the experience and means to make it happen. The logical place for a restaurant is inside the south barn. For this year, however, you'll find Acres of Adventure in that same space. It's the last barn to be fully developed, but it will be just fine for offering a fun, farm experience for our guests this fall. Acres of Adventure will have all of the favorite activities from last fall with some new additions as well. But, don't get too used to finding Acres of Adventure in the last barn. We still have more plans up our sleeves.
Acres of Adventure would be best-suited in its own building, something that's designed to be a fully-functional education center with all the infrastructure and space needed to really take it to the next level. Have you ever heard of Fair Oaks Farms in Indiana? If you haven't, do some reading. Acres of Adventure would love to bring that concept to Bucyrus: authentic, interactive, entertaining, suitable for all ages, agricultural education. That project is hopefully attainable within a year, but we'll need your help. There are couple of ways to do that. First, please continue to support Acres of Adventure now to help us get to where we want to be in the future. Second, in the next few months, we'll be reaching out to businesses and individuals that share our vision of connecting guests with the world around them and helping them to understand food, farming, and the environment. If you share our passion of presenting a positive image of modern agriculture and fostering an appreciation of food and the environment, let us know.
We may not be where we thought we would be a year ago, and if we had a dime for every time that we've changed our plans since starting to craft The Pickwick Place, our brand new concrete parking lot would be paid for. That's what makes our work so exciting: it's brainstorming, creative thinking, and problem solving all rolled into one. It's knowing where we want to go but not being afraid to take unconventional routes to get there. It's not getting frustrated when we get stuck in traffic or when we take a detour. It's buckling our seat belts and enjoying the ride. It's being thankful that all of you are are on this journey with us, too.
So remember: some times, Plan A won't work out. Don't let that be the end of your dreams. After all, there are 25 more letters in the alphabet!
Until next time,
