“Will you be my Maid of Honor?” A phrase that at first brings so much excitement to the room and one you cannot wait to hear when you grow up with an older sister. However, the excitement quickly turned into a panic realizing I was the lucky one who had to come up with the “perfect” maid of honor speech.

Growing up I was heavily involved in 4-H and FFA so the idea of public speaking never phased me until I realized this one was going to be in front of all my friends and family who were patiently awaiting a memorable speech. Lucky for me, I had a very close friend give me the best piece of advice I could have asked for. She said, “Just keep it short and simple. Make sure to use things everyone can laugh at, and most of all have fun!”

After successfully writing and delivering my speech I have a few more words of wisdom for those panicking in the same shoes I was in just a few short months ago! First, make sure you practice, because I promise you it’s a lot more nerve-wracking up there than you anticipate. Secondly, make sure you have a good mix of serious and funny within the speech. You don’t want to bore the crowd with a bunch of sappy stories but you also have to show you took your duties seriously! And lastly, I want to reiterate the fact that you need to just have fun with it! Your speech may not go exactly as planned, but you are up there for a reason. You probably know the bride better than she knows herself, so just let whatever is on your mind come out!

Good luck creating your perfect Maid of Honor (or Best Man!) speech.
